"Most City Parks Earn Solid Marks, With Some Lagging" - NYTimes.com

Something to be learned for Southern Community Park? Is it really a park or an athletic and dog-pooping facility with a nice kids' playground? What makes a park a park?

Trail

This from the Chapel Hill Town Council meeitng notes:
"Morgan Creek Trail Improvements: The Council accepted $750,000 in Direct Allocation funds through the Metropolitan Planning Organization's Surface Transportation Program, for phase 2 of the Morgan Creek Trail project. Preliminary estimates indicate that the total project will cost about $2.8 million. The entire Morgan Creek Trail/Fan Branch Trail system is envisioned to be a 10-foot wide trail that will allow pedestrian and bicycle traffic to travel from the southern tip of Southern Community Park to University Lake in Carrboro, with a side trail to Merritt's Pasture.

Phase 2 of the project will connect the existing Fan Branch Trail with the existing section of Morgan Creek Trail. It will involve the construction of about 1,200 linear feet of trail with 2 bridges and an underpass of Culbreth Road. In addition it would directly connect the existing Phase 1 project to the existing 1.6 mile Fan Branch Trail to create a 2.7 mile paved trail that would link Southern Community Park, Southern Village, Scroggs Elementary School, and various neighborhoods south of NC 54."

"Hitting the Road to Get to Work, and Back" - NYTimes.com

I'd love to see a lot more parents undertake "active commutes" in picking up or dropping off their kids at Scroggs, and perhaps other schools. It's embarrassing to imagine what a short distance so many of them likely drive their behemoth automobiles and trucks to and from the school.
